Throwing the first pebble

How to find a focus for my inquiry

I found tonight's skype call with a module two focus so beneficial. There was only a few of us, Helen, Nicole, Sophie, Shanice and myself. We're all dancers but all had different areas we were looking to focus on, so it was interesting to hear everyone else's ideas.

Helen said our first idea is like the first pebble thrown into a pond and the ideas that follow and progress, just like the ripples in the water.

We all helped one another think about different perspectives and how we could look at our initial ideas from different angles. We were also reminded that the main point of our inquiry is to end up having a better understanding of something that's relevant to our professional practice and also something that will improve our practice. This course is helping us develop our professional practice.

Helen said as we are dancers it'd be helpful to think of it like choreography, until you've developed material and refined it, only then do you get the essence of the piece. Therefore, I need to read a lot more and research other's ideas, theories and opinions to help me find a focus. It was also a good tip not to fall into a trap that your own experience isn't the only experience.

I hope this helps anybody who couldn't make the call! I'm excited to start exploring and discussing my focus with others within and outside of the course.

  1. Thanks for this post Rachel i found it extremely helpfull as i wasn't part of the skype call.

The part about perspectives really resonated with me as looking deeper into my practice is something that i have been doing a lot recently and finding an inquiry title for something that is actually going to enhance my practice is something that i have realised is important, only through thinking and writing about things that are important to me have helped me to see this clearer.

Thanks for the post home to speak with you and hear your perspectives soon on a skype call.

    Rachel
