Journal Writing Experience
Task 2b: Reflective writing task
So I have completed my "nine days in nine ways", and it was very interesting as I've been so used to using the same writing style in my journal for the last couple of years.
I noticed that I mention my ballet class almost every day, and think this demonstrates what a fundamental start to my day it is, as it prepares my body for any rehearsals or shows I have.
I was most comfortable writing for days 1 (description of what happened and the main events) and 2 (initial reflection of feelings, thoughts and mood), as I'm used to these writing styles in my own personal journal.
The days I found difficult were 5 (diagram or chart of the day), 7 (another's perspective of my day), and 8 (reflect through video). For day 5 I couldn't decide on whether to use a diagram, chart or graph and how to structure it. I ended up making a simple pie chart, but I don't think this was beneficial practice to me as I had a performance so spent pretty much all day at the theatre! Day 7 was quite challenging to put myself into someone else's shoes and reflect from the outside on my day, but it also got me thinking instead of just scribbling down what happened. I disliked day 8 the most as I kept hesitating when talking to the camera and had to start over again multiple times, but it was good practice for interviews or even video auditions. Here is the link to my video from day 8: https://youtu.be/fKiW4Lyiql8.
Day 6 (what could/love/hate happen) really got me thinking as it wasn't just about my daily routine. It was a great way to look at things on a broader scale and think about where I would aspire to be in the future and be able to view where I am now in my career in the arts as a stepping stone. This style would be a nice way to look back in the future and compare my goals and ambitions.
I will definitely use day 4 (evaluation of what went well/didn't/things to avoid/things I learnt) again, as it was useful to reflect on both the good AND bad parts of my day, which is what reflecting is all about. This will also help my professional practice for planning and reflecting as it's kind of a way of giving myself advice for the future with what to avoid and what I learnt (we learn something new every day!).
All in all, I really enjoyed this task and will try to start using different writing styles in my own journal! I'm trying to get back into reading and I'm currently reading 'Reflective practice' fourth edition by Gillie Bolton which I highly recommend!
Great to noticing within what you are doing: this is critical reflection. You noticed ballet class comes up a lot within your reflections. Virginia Johnson principle dancer at Dance Theatre of Harlem when I was there used to say morning class was like a hanger to hang the rest of your day on. I miss not getting to do class each morning.
ReplyDeleteThat's such a great way to put it. Yes I can't imagine starting the day without it!
